Coral Calcium

The body of an adult person should contain around two percent calcium (weight percent). A majority of the calcium is found in your skeleton and in your teeth where it keeps bones and teeth strong and durable. The rest of the calcium is stored in tissues or free in the blood stream. You calcium needs will fluctuate over the course of your life. Children and teenagers need a lot of calcium since their bones are growing and upcoming teeth are being hardened by calcium. Older women are often susceptible to osteoporosis and should therefore also make sure that they receive plenty of calcium. According to the Australian Nutrition Survey, up to 90 percent of the female population in Australia does not receive enough calcium from their diet. For men and children, the number is 70 percent. Since the Australian diet is similar to the diet in many other western countries, including the United States, it is not hard to realize the potential benefits of coral calcium.

The benefits of coral calcium are not limited to strong bones and teeth; calcium is also necessary when the body regulates muscles. Without sufficient amounts of calcium, the body will encounter problems when trying to contract and relax muscles throughout the entire body. Calcium will play a vital role during the transmission of messages within the nervous system. Another important function of calcium is its regulating effect on the heart. Low amounts of calcium in your diet will also affect the blood’s ability to clot and the functioning of enzymes.

If you do not provide your body with sufficient amounts of calcium, it will soon notice a lack of free calcium circulating in the blood stream. This will make the body release certain hormones that tries to conserve calcium by not excreting it, which means that the kidneys will not release calcium into the urine. If the calcium deficiency is prolonged, this action will not be enough and eventually the body will be forced to remove calcium from the bones to keep up other activities, such as regulating heart beat and transmitting nervous impulses. Since calcium is what makes your bones strong, calcium extraction from the bones is naturally very bad for the strength and durability of your bone structure. One of the benefits of coral calcium is therefore its ability to prevent weak and brittle bones and thereby also prevent injuries caused by fragile bones.

Exploring the Benefits of Coral Calcium

Coral Calcium is a salt of calcium derived from fossilized coral reefs.  Coral Calcium is promoted by some as one of the finest sources of absorbable calcium in the world and some of the highest quality Coral Calcium in found in the reefs off the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa Islands.  Coral Calcium is also found naturally in the soil in Japan.  Coral calcium is heavily promoted as a superior form of calcium and while coral calcium isn't chemically different from other calcium carbonate products, coral calcium is a composite of 70 or so different minerals, of which calcium is the largest component. It may be this wide combination of minerals that leads to its potential benefit.

Dr Bob Barefoot, author of the book The Calcium Factor and marketing a new coral calcium supplement called SolarCal D is one of the most visible proponents of the benefits of coral calcium. Barefoot and his company marketed coral calcium as a cure for diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, lupus, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Today, Barefoot still sells his coral calcium product, minus the claims that it can cure after coming under fire from the FDA and the FTC. Coral calcium is also suggested to offer benefits in buffering the natual pH of the body and Barefoot recommends determining the daily dosage by testingthe pH of your saliva (a test that is not valid for determining calcium needs).

Some Web sites will tell you coral calcium is a miracle worker and that it can even cure cancer and other serious diseases.  Coral Calcium is not a cure-all, but as a dietary supplement it may provide benefit by supplementing important minerals that would be found in an agriculture supply that is not derived from stripped soil which is promoted through simple N-P-K fertilizer. Coral calcium may be much more than just a source of calcium as it is found to contain calcium, magnesium and trace minerals that are necessary for several body functions.
